Correct Mixing and Application of Structural Adhesive in Steel Bonding Reinforcement

The mixing and application of structural adhesive are crucial in the steel bonding reinforcement process.    Improper operation may affect the performance of the adhesive.   So, how should we correctly mix and apply structural adhesive?  What standards and precautions should be taken in this process?  Let's explore together.

1

I. Preparation and Mixing of the Adhesive

Firstly, the preparation and mixing of the adhesive are prerequisites for using structural adhesive.        It is essential to strictly follow the ratio of the main agent to the curing agent, carefully read the product instructions, and then mix the structural adhesive in the correct proportions into a container.        Stir evenly with a mixing tool, taking care to prevent air from entering to avoid bubbles.

It is important to note that the structural adhesive should be prepared and used immediately.        The unmixed components should be resealed and stored to avoid waste.        Additionally, the prepared adhesive should be used within the operational time to ensure the performance of the adhesive.        Adhesive that has exceeded the specified applicability period should not be used again to avoid affecting the reinforcement effect.

II.        Standard Application of Structural Adhesive

Secondly, when applying structural adhesive, the well-mixed adhesive should be brushed simultaneously on the surface of the steel plate and the concrete substrate.        Check for any missed or insufficient brushing areas, and after confirming that the brushing is in place, proceed with the steel plate bonding.

The thickness of the brushed adhesive layer is generally 2 millimeters, and the application is usually thicker in the middle and thinner at the sides.        When bonding in a downward, vertical, or upward position, the flowability of the adhesive should meet the corresponding requirements.

III.        Correct Use of Structural Adhesive

Furthermore, when using structural adhesive, it is also necessary to strictly adhere to safety standards and rules.        For example, store the raw materials of the adhesive in a sealed container, away from fire sources;        ensure good ventilation in the construction site;        keep the construction environment clean and dry;        operators should wear work clothes and protective gloves.        If the adhesive accidentally comes into contact with the skin, it can be cleaned with acetone or alcohol.        If it enters the eyes, rinse immediately with a large amount of water and seek medical attention.

IV. Construction Process of Structural Adhesive Reinforcement:

1.        Substrate Surface Treatment: The concrete surface should be chiseled to remove paint, grease, and dust, then polished with an angle grinder to remove 1-2mm of the surface.        After polishing, the surface should be cleaned with compressed air.        Finally, the surface should be cleaned with acetone-soaked cotton cloth, and the adhesive surface should be completely dry for later use.

2.        Positioning and Drilling: According to construction requirements, lay out the position line for steel plate bonding, determine the drilling specifications for the anchor bolts, and drill holes at the corresponding positions on the steel plate based on the distribution of the anchor bolts.

3.        Anchor Bolts and Steel Plate: Plant the anchor bolts as required, descale and roughen the steel surface as required, and polish the metal luster with a grinding machine.        The rougher the grinding, the better, and the grinding pattern should be perpendicular to the direction of force on the steel.        Then, clean with cotton dipped in acetone and set aside after complete drying.

4.        Mixing and Applying Adhesive: When mixing the adhesive, it is best to stir in the same direction to avoid mixing with air to form bubbles and maintain good ventilation at the mixing site.        After the steel adhesive is prepared, apply it to the treated steel plate or concrete surface with an oil knife.        The cross-section of the adhesive should be triangular, about 3mm in the middle, and about 1mm thick at the edges.

5.        Bonding Steel Plate: Nowadays, most steel plate bonding construction no longer uses the old method of supporting with props, but uses bolts for pressure fixing, or for other needs, drill holes in the concrete components and steel plates.

6.        Resting and Curing: After cleaning up the residual adhesive, apply a layer of anti-rust paint on the original steel plate surface.        After drying, apply a second layer of anti-rust paint.        If there is a fire protection requirement, apply fireproof materials on the surface as required.

In summary, adhering to these standards and precautions in conjunction with a standardized steel bonding reinforcement construction process can better utilize the performance of the steel bonding adhesive.  This not only benefits the performance of the adhesive but also helps to improve the overall quality of reinforcement.
